Panchakarma: Restoring Balance in Autoimmune Disorders

Ayurvedic Treatment for Autoimmune Disorders

Ayurveda has dedicatedly proved that health is not the state of having no disease but also includes the balance of dosha, dathu, agni, and malakriya. It keeps all three souls (Prasanna aatma), sense organs(indriya), and mind(manas) balanced, and for this panchakarma is a treatment program taken to cleanse all these deeply and rejuvenate. It is based on the Ayurvedic principle that every human is made up of the five basic elements ether, air, fire, water, and earth.

All these elements are combined to result in doshas which are vata, pitta, and kapha each human has different balances of all these and when there is any disbalance between these three, it causes autoimmune disorders.

Panchakarma treatment is taken into consideration for the person having any such issue and the treatment is different for everyone. It is taken based on close observation and supervision. The very first step of treatment is pre-purifying the body with the two methods snehan and svedana and later on shodanas are followed.

Before this, you must know that each needs a different treatment

Why this is so? If the question is coming to your mind then here is the answer. Everybody has a unique constitution of the vata, pitta, and Kapha. You should know that the disbalance of these doshas is not a disease but for sure can affect your body and to keep it the same you need to go for panchkarma treatment.

Problems happened due to unbalanced doshas:

  • Hypertension
  • Constipation
  • Weight loss
  • Weakness
  • Arthritis
  • Insomnia
  • Digestives issues

Let’s just step-by-step understanding:

First of all pre purification measures are used: Snehan and Svedana

  • Snehan: it is an oil massage in which oil is applied on the entire body with unique massage methods that help in moving toxins from the body to the gastrointestinal tract. It makes the tissues soft and helps in releasing stress and it is given daily for three to seven days continuously.
  • Svedana: svedana is a sweating method given regularly same as snehan in which herbal concoction is applied to the body which helps in increasing the movement of toxins towards the gastrointestinal tract.

After this indicated method for three to seven days, your doshas become ripened, and after that shodana treatment is given.

Shodana is a process of five steps or panch karma which means five actions or five treatments discussed in detail below:

  • Vamana: this is the first step of the process taken to minimize congestion in the lungs which causes a cold, cough, or asthma. In this therapeutic vomiting or vamana ensures the elimination of kapha or extra mucus from the lungs. Once the step is taken the patient will feel much relaxed and even the emotions settle down in the lungs the patient will feel relaxed, with lightness in the chest, clear thinking, a clear voice, and a good appetite.
  • Virechan: when your body has accumulated excess bile in the gall bladder, liver, and small intestine, it causes rashes, inflammation, acne, chronic attacks of fever, and jaundice. Purgatives help relieve the excess pitta causing the disturbance in the body and cure the problem of excess pitta during this treatment, you should avoid eating foods that cause unbalance again.
  • Basti: Vata is the most important of the active principles and with the proper balance of Vata you will be able to have a disease-free life. It is the main cause of a lot of diseases. Vata is located in the long intestine and also it has a way in bone tissue. For this, any medication given through rectal goes deeper and corrects the vata disorders.
  • Nasya: the nose is called a doorway to the brain and nasal administration is taken for pranya disorders, sinus congestion, migraine headaches, convulsions, and ear and eye problems. for this treatment finger is dipped into the ghee inserted into the nose and massaged slowly as deeply as possible. the whole step helps you in solving a lot of problems.
  • Rakta moksha is the last and final step of panchakarma in which toxins present in the gastrointestinal tract and later on absorbed into the blood causing infections, hypertension, and circulatory conditions. This toxin blood is extracted from the body and at the end of this step the patient will find himself better. In this method, leeches are also used to extract the toxic blood from the body.
